Varna is a Bulgarian town on the Black sea coast. It has a rich history as an old settlement with precious architectural marks as well as early trading and craftsmanship of gold (among many other characteristics).
The project Connecting was a two week focus on these aspects that prevail over time. They mirror human potential development in the area.
Using the gold-leafing technique, golden lines were placed on various buildings around the Old Town. Positioned at eye level, they catch the sunlight and reflect it, encouraging passers-by to see a mirrored glint — not just of the work, but of the continuous interplay between history and the present. By letting the texture of each wall show through, the gold freezes a moment: the building as it is now, in dialogue with all the people who have walked Varna’s streets and built it up over time — a sort of eye-to-eye moment, where the other eye belongs to the past and to all who came before. Visitor’s presence are both the present and the future, the potential.
Gold is used both materially — a real, shimmering metal — and metaphorically: as a symbol of potential, richness, connection.
There are ten lines marking this work across Varna. Refer to the MAP for the locations.
